Day 20: Saint-Amand-leys-Eaux to Maubeuge
The blog is back after a day sabbatical. The internet has returned! All hail the Wi-Fi router!
Mum arrived on Tuesday with some lovely British rain. She found the Chuckle Brothers struggling but she has restored clam and order to the van. It’s great to have her with us!
Today’s ride was a long one on paper. It was freezing cold in the morning even though it was sunny. We briefly had the heating on in the morning! I followed the classic breakfast routine and did extra stretches to help my tight calves. Dad and I left and cycled through a lovely forest. I had my GoPro with me so I was catching lots of good footage…mainly of Dad’s behind to begin with haha! My first “spoon” came early on. Usual stuff…I blame the internet…never my fault. I found my way after 10mins and was back on track.
Most of the ride was through gorgeous countryside. The road surface varied in quality. It was mostly decent but for 3 miles it was cobblestone! This is the first time I’ve experienced this surface and it isn’t fun! After that bone shattering interlude, I was happy to get back on the road. I carried on my merry way to Maubeuge through fields and sleepy villages. I reached the campsite after nearly 3 hours of riding. I was feeling tired and my legs were struggling a little. Mum had to massage my calves. She’s been looking after me since she arrived! Thanks Mum! Today’s ride distance was 56km. I’m looking forward to relaxing and enjoying French Independence tomorrow!
Here are some snaps from Day 19’s ride that didn’t make the blog yesterday!
