Day 65: Surcuoln to Sedrun
It was an interesting night’s sleep. I only managed to get 3-4 hours but I felt quite good in the morning. My legs and hip weren’t as stiff as I was expecting so I felt more confident for today’s ride. Dad was joining me for the next mountain stage, let’s hope it isn’t too steep.
It all started easily enough as we turned out of the campsite onto a pleasant downhill. This quickly changed as we struggled up a steep section of hill! I’m sure we were supposed to be going downhill! Didn’t we do enough climbing yesterday?! Check out the views from up here, we need to get down to the river!
The downhill didn’t take long to appear! We cruised down the mountain at a decent pace, intermittently slowed down by hair pin corners. Dad loved it because he was reaping the benefits of Tim’s climbing skills yesterday. Poor Captain Tortoise. He had a tough drive in the van on lots of narrow roads so fair play to him!
We reached the main road next to the Rhine and followed it for a couple of miles. A Eurovelo Cycle Route sign appeared and told us to follow a different path. We decided to follow it but it soon turned into a poor gravel surface. Brilliant. This continued for a couple of kilometres until we reached a small village. We agreed that it would be a wise idea to get back onto the main road because it was slow going on this dodgy path. The route up to the main road was very steep (of course) so we slowly made our way up. We had to get off our bikes and push because the surface was so poor that the wheels weren’t gripping. Check out Dad showing us his pushing skills!
The next part of the main road wasn’t enjoyable as it was narrow and there wasn’t a bike lane There was a gentle incline but nothing too challenging. The final part of the trip looked tough on the map. Luckily it wasn’t as bad as yesterday. The climb was gentle but still challenging.
We arrived at the campsite after 2hrs 42mins of cycling. Check out the stats below. Once again the campsite is situated in an amazing location. We really feel like we are in camping in the mountains. More climbing is on the cards tomorrow so I’m going to rest this evening. My legs and hip are feeling stiff and painful but hopefully a decent sleep will sort me out!
