Day 59: St Margrethen to Feldkirch
Where has the summer gone? We woke up this morning freezing our butts off (as Brandi would say!). Hopefully it’ll warm up again later this week! On went the extra layer much to my annoyance.
We faced a simple ride up the Rhine into Austria. We were staying in our sixth country of the trip this evening. The cycle route along the river seemed straightforward. We set off with the mountains in the distance but by the time we’d finished the ride they were a lot closer!
Our speed was down a little on the normal pace but we still made decent progress. We had to veer off the cycle route because it became gravelly. Haunting images of flat tyres came flooding back. The new track brought us through some towns and past this lovely church.
There was only 7km left of the ride when we met another gravel track. Thus time we were in a forest and there was no turning back. Dad decided to take the risk and go for it anyway. Luckily we all made it through unscathed! We made our way to Feldkirch first as we wanted to check it out and go to the supermarket. It is a beautiful town with awesome landscape surrounding it. We finished our ride in a couple of hours and covered 37km. My shoulder seems to be improving and my legs are still holding up!
In the evening we went into the town centre to have dinner with my friend Paula from Argentina. She is visiting Europe with her parents and coincidentally we were in Austria at the same time. It was great to see her again and meet her parents and friends. Paula’s dad, Rodolfo was on top form and loved speaking Spanish at everybody like they were a native speaker. It was a great evening and I was happy to have a night off from cooking! Good luck with the rest of your trip and thank you for the delicious alfajores (Argentine choco biscuit filled with dulce de luce). Looking forward to eating them mmmmmm!
