Day 30: Sedan to Florenville
I’m back after a two day rest! A big thank you to Dad for the last few blogs. Today’s ride back to Belgium was an eventful one!
We had a fun rest day in Sedan but we did a lot of walking so my hip was feeling a bit stiff this morning. It rained heavily throughout the night but it had dried a little by the morning. The weather forecast was for cloud but I wasn’t so sure…on went the raincoat. Today’s ride was to Florenville in Belgium and I would be riding alone. Dad was driving the van. Great timing on his behalf as there were lots of hills on the route and it was pretty cold. Check out VIDEO 1 for my Sedan departure.
One of the features of this trip has been the lack of people in villages I cycle through. Check out VIDEO 2 to see what I mean.
The countryside was spectacular. Lots of big open valleys with forests either side (See VIDEO 3 and VIDEO 4).
My good pal Google maps took me on another cracker of road today. It looked like it was going to be a dodgy one when I planned the route this morning. I quite like these random roads so I never know what to expect. This road took me through a thickly wooded area on a dirt track. I was heading towards the border and then all of a sudden the puddles appeared. That rain last night was coming back and biting me on the….backside. I weaved past the puddles, trying not to get wet or muddy but it was impossible. Dad’s bike definitely would have struggled so I was pleased he was driving! Check out VIDEO 5 to see the puddles!
I finally found signs of life as I neared Florenville. It seemed everybody in Belgium had decided to congregate at giant street fete in a town called Muno. The road was covered with stalls, bars, food shacks, merry-go-rounds and loads of people! I “rode” through at snails pace trying to avoid hitting everyone (see VIDEO 6). I was pleased to escape the madness and get back onto peaceful roads.
I arrived in Florenville after 2 hours behind the handlebars, 548m of climbing and 36km. Luckily it didn’t rain and I found the campsite with ease! More Belgium action tomorrow!
